The MSOC-Nanochemisty group focuses its research efforts on the functionalisation and purification of carbon nanostructures using non-conventional techniques, obtaining results that show how scaling up is possible using green methodologies. The group has used microwave radiation and ball milling methodologies for the functionalisation of carbon nanostructures in solvent-free conditions.


Ball milling conditions in dry media have also being used for the exfoliation of graphite and the preparation of stable graphene dispersions in many solvents. This protocol (published in Nature Protocols ) represents, today, one of the best ways for producing stable aqueous dispersions of graphene in macroscopic quantities and has permitted the collaboration with companies interested in graphene production (such as Antolín group) and with many research groups. In fact, the graphene dispersions can be used for a number of applications, including toxicological and environmental studies, while opening the door to the preparation of new graphene composites.


The MSOC-Nanochemistry group is testing graphene related materials in several cell models, analysing their effect on toxicity, motility, including metabolomic studies. Moreover, the incorporation of those nanostructures in three dimensional polymeric scaffolds allows the preparation of new stimuli-responsive materials as intelligent systems, which can be applied in a wide range of fields such as drug delivery, tissue engineering or even soft robotics.
